Anatolian and Indo-European legal language (I). Hittite āra, natta āra, a Hieroglyphic Luwian crux, and a Tocharian parallel

Timothy G. Barnes

Pages 27 - 60

This paper offers a new interpretation of the Luwian binomial ara pata (attested in BABYLON 1). I argue that it belongs to a larger class of “legal binomials”, and suggest that a distant but exact phraseological parallel is to be found in Tocharian. The implications for the etymology of Hittite and Luwian ara are explored.
